Small Straight vs. Large Straight: What Counts and What They Score

Small straight: 30 points

Only four of your five dice need to form the run; the fifth die can be anything, including a duplicate. All of these score 30:

• 1-2-3-4-6 (run of 1-2-3-4)
• 2-3-4-5-5 (run of 2-3-4-5, duplicate 5 ignored)
• 3-4-5-6-1 (run of 3-4-5-6)

Large straight: 40 points

All five dice must form the run, so there are only two shapes: 1-2-3-4-5 and 2-3-4-5-6. Order on the table doesn't matter; 4-2-5-3-6 is a large straight.

Chasing the extra 10 points

Holding an inside run like 2-3-4-5 gives you two turns of decision: re-roll the spare die for the large straight (a 1 or 6 completes it, 1 in 3 odds per roll), or bank the guaranteed 30. The usual rule of thumb: if Small Straight is still open, take the sure 30 early in the game; chase the 40 when your small straight box is already filled or you're behind late. An open-ended hold of 1-2-3-4 or 3-4-5-6 completes on only one specific number, so it's a strictly worse chase.

Straights in Feltzee

Feltzee labels the boxes Sm. Straight and Lg. Straight and detects runs automatically, including the classic miss where a duplicate hides a valid small straight (2-3-3-4-5 is still a small straight). While you decide whether to chase, the card shows both live: 30 sitting in Small Straight, and what the same dice would earn in every other open box. Tap-to-hold the four run dice, re-roll the spare, and watch the Large Straight box light up at 40 if it lands.

Quick answers

Does 2-3-3-4-5 count as a small straight?

Yes. Four different consecutive numbers are present (2-3-4-5); the duplicate 3 is simply ignored.

Can you score a large straight in the small straight box?

Yes. A run of five contains a run of four, so a large straight can fill the Small Straight box for 30 if that's your better move.
